Realising German Wine had lost its appeal to todays consumers, who preferred New World tastes with their less inhibiting packaging presentations, resulted in a consortium of wine producers approaching Blackburn’s for an appraisal to the way forward. The outcome: Reh Kendermann commissioned Blackburn's to create a new brand to be marketed internationally
in English speaking countries.

Visiting the vineyards, the consultancy were taken by their breathtaking location nestled in the valleys by the River Rhine. From a high vantage point the name ‘Bend in the River’ was born. The bottle was an important aspect of the work.

The tall ‘German flute’ was rejected as it would compound the problem and the ubiquitous Bordeaux and Burgundy bottles wouldn’t signal something significant was happening to German wine. ‘Bend in the River’ was to have its very own elegant,
tall profile. All varieties were acid etched apart from the depiction of the river gently winding its way around each bottle.
